“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law” (Galatians 4:4).

It was not a coincidence that Jesus was born when or where He was. God’s timing is always perfect!

One of the hardest lessons for us to learn in the Christian life is to learn to wait on God’s perfect timing. Whether it’s in the area of relationships, finances, or vocation, we need to be very careful not to run ahead of God. Because whenever we run ahead of God and try and take things into our own hands, we usually miss God’s direction and get ourselves into all kinds of trouble.

The whole Middle East conflict today is the result of one man who tried to take God’s timing into his own hands.

But God’s timing is always perfect. My father used to tell me, “God is seldom early, but He’s never late!” And “when the fullness of time was come” – when the timing was exactly right – “God sent forth His Son.”

Historians tell us that the time was ripe for the Savior to be born. The old religions were dying; the old philosophies were empty and powerless to change men’s lives. Religious bankruptcy and spiritual hunger were everywhere. God was preparing the world for the arrival of His Son.

Be assured that God is at work providentially in each one of our lives. Nothing ever happens by chance. There is no such thing as bad luck or good luck in the Christian life. But God is using the circumstances and people He allows into our lives to accomplish His purposes.

Whatever your circumstances, whatever you’re going through – God can be trusted because God is sovereign and He is in total control.

“Looking unto Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2).

The writer of the book of Hebrews includes a little phrase in the twelfth chapter which expresses the entire secret of the Christian life. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking Unto Jesus…”

The word “looking” is a translation of an untranslatable Greek word. It means to fix our gaze upon Him, and to turn it away from everything else. We are to look unto Jesus and at nothing else – certainly not at our troubles or circumstances.

David’s circumstances were less than ideal. Just a few days before he was established as king, we are told that “David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him…but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6).

Satan often brings to us the greatest discouragements just before God is about to intervene and bring blessing. That’s why Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

There are at least two ways that we – like David – can encourage our hearts in the Lord when faced with troubles and discouragement.

First, spend more time reading God’s Word — especially the book of Psalms. Many of David’s Psalms especially are written from the perspective of overwhelming discouragement and help us to see God’s perspective on life.

During my first year in the ministry, a member of our congregation was terminally ill in hospital. On one particular occasion when I went to visit him, he was troubled and discouraged, and nothing the hospital staff would do could calm him down. Not knowing what else to do, I started reading to him from the Psalms. Even the hospital staff were amazed at how the reading of God’s Word had such a powerful calming affect upon this man’s spirit.

Secondly, meditate on God’s Word – especially at night when it seems that the enemy brings the most discouraging thoughts to our minds. David said in Psalm 63:5-6 “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.”

Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a Roman prison. Added to that was the uncertainty that at any moment a Roman soldier could take his life. From a human perspective, Paul had ample reason to be discouraged. But there is not a trace of discouragement in the whole epistle. Instead it’s filled with “peace” and “joy.” Paul writes: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

The last thing you think about at night is usually the first thing you think about the next morning – so fix your mind upon the life-giving truths of God’s Word rather than the destructive lies of the enemy.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The only power that Satan has over us is the power of the lie. That’s his modus operandi. When we believe Satan’s lies, he is then able to influence and control us and cause all kinds of chaos and devastation in our lives and relationships.

That’s why Paul tells us that we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Any thought that does not line up with the truth of God’s Word is to be rejected and renounced.

One of those lies that we have a tendency to believe is that if my circumstances were different, I would be different too. The truth is that circumstances do not make me what I am; they merely reveal the type of person that I am already. Circumstances are the true test of Christian character. God uses the tough times to reveal our rough edges. God brings circumstances and people into our lives to show us the type of person that we really are – so He can change us.

Every circumstance that touches your life has first been filtered through the fingers of a loving God. No matter what our situation, we need to understand two truths.

The first is that God is good (Psalm 73:1). It’s easy to acknowledge that truth when everything is going well; but even when things don’t go according to our plans, we need to remember that God is still good because God doesn’t change (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8)!

The second truth is that regardless of our circumstances, God is still in control, because God is sovereign. Nothing takes God by surprise and nothing happens apart from His permissive will.

Learn to see life from God’s perspective. Recognize that He has given you your own unique set of circumstances today. These are not designed to harm you, but to teach you more of the character of Christ (Romans 8:28-29).
