“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who… became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:5,8).

We normally think of Christ’s death as the event which took place on the cross. But there are many other significant ways in which Christ died every single day while He was on earth which need to be understood. Christ died to the right to make His Own decisions.

When Christ was on earth, He made no decisions on His own but did only that which was directed by His Heavenly Father. Jesus said, “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John 6:38). His continual attitude was “…not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). When we have that same attitude, it is then possible for God to accomplish His will through our lives.

If we have the attitude that says, “I will do this no matter what anyone else says or thinks,” then we are not following the example of Christ but of Satan. Isaiah 14 describes the fall of Satan and it reveals his attitude of pride and rebellion (v.v.12-14). Five times Satan declares his independence and asserts, “I will…” The Lord Jesus says, “Father, not My will, but Thine be done.”

If we want to live for God, if we want to bring Him glory, then it is so important that we allow Him to make the decisions in our lives. Whose authority are you submitted to? Have you ever yielded your rights to God? Have you ever died to the right to make your own decisions?

Dead people are no longer are in control. They do not get their feelings hurt. They have no opinion of their own. They do not get offended.

It is in dying – not in doing – that we bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.

“Looking unto Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2).

As we look in the Scriptures, we find that the teaching of Jesus is our instruction for living the Christian life. It’s not a matter of becoming a Christian and just doing our own thing. The Lord Jesus Christ has standards and instructions for every area of our lives.

Every decision we make needs to be based squarely upon the Word of God.

Life is held together by a very intricate series of cause-and-effect relationships. You can’t obey the teachings of Christ without being blessed. You cannot disobey them without there being consequences. And in every area of life where we disobey or ignore the teachings of Christ there will be resulting conflicts and problems.

I’ve come to the conclusion that very few people actually want Biblical counsel. It’s very easy to help people who are desperate and are longing for a closer walk with God. It’s impossible to help people that merely want a resolution of their conflicts.

Parents want help with troubled youth but not enough to change their own wrong attitudes. People want help with their marriage but not enough to take responsibility for their own sin and say, “I was wrong. Will you please forgive me?”

So often we base our decisions and actions on feelings or preferences rather than on the rock solid teaching of God’s Word.

It doesn’t matter what you or I think, or even what our favorite author or radio preacher says – it matters what the Bible says. That’s all that matters. That means we need to be men and women of the Word and we need to live not according to opinions or preferences but we need to live by Biblical standards. We need to forgive even when we don’t feel like it. We need to be honest when it would be easier to lie or cheat.

Don’t allow the enemy to distract and fool you with his lies. Dedicate yourself afresh to the authority of God’s Word.
