“Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19).

The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to the disciples. The sermon is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus has just called His twelve disciples and is telling them what discipleship is all about. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different – Matthew 5:17-48 shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their interpretation of Scripture.

The world is its own authority, but the disciple of Jesus Christ willingly puts himself under the ultimate authority of the Word of God.

A mam came to my father many years ago in Belfast, Northern Ireland and asked a question. He said, “Jack, doesn’t it say in the Bible, Eat, drink and be merry?“ My father replied, “Yes, it does say that, but…” He interrupted, “That’s alright. That’s all I want to know!”

Let’s face it, a person can twist Scripture to say whatever he wants it to say. He can force his own interpretation to justify almost any lifestyle. But the disciple of Jesus Christ must be different. Others might adjust Scripture to justify their behavior, but the disciple must allow Scripture to legislate his behavior.

So often we base our decisions and actions on feelings or preferences rather than on the rock solid teaching of God’s Word.

It doesn’t matter what you or I think, or even what our favorite author or radio preacher says – it matters what the Bible says. That’s all that matters.

That means we need to be men and women of the Word and we need to live not according to opinions or preferences or feelings, but we need to live by Biblical standards. We need to forgive even when we don’t feel like it. We need to be honest when it would be easier to lie or cheat. We need to be committed to the marriage relationship regardless of how we have been hurt or wronged by our spouse.

The disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different.

Dedicate yourself afresh to the authority of God’s Word and submit yourself today to its teaching and principles. That’s what is going to make a difference – now and in eternity!

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

thinkingSpiritual warfare isn’t limited to the mission field. It takes place every single day in your life and in mine. The battleground is the mind. That’s why Paul says that we are to take captive “…every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

What we think about will have far reaching implications into each area of our lives including our health, our relationships with others, and our walk with God.

If we are constantly thinking about the people that have wronged us in the past then we will become bitter and become just like them in attitude – because we are continually being shaped to the object of our focus.

If we dwell on our circumstances and allow our mind to consider every possible negative outcome, we will become anxious and discouraged.

Paul provides us with a list of things to wrap our minds around in Philippians 4:8 – but what could he be talking about? There is an interesting correlation between Paul’s admonition and David’s description of the Word of God in Psalm 19:

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether” (Psalm 19:7-9).

Do you see the connection? God’s Word needs to be our focus. Reject those thoughts that the enemy brings to your mind that do not line up with the teachings of Scripture. Its Truth is like an anchor that keeps us steady during the changing circumstances and storms of life.

“David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him…but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6).

David was facing a crisis. He was unaware that in just a few short days God would intervene and he would finally be established as King over Israel.

Satan often brings to us the most intense discouragements just before God is about to intervene and bring blessing. That’s why Paul says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

There are at least two ways we can learn from David to encourage our hearts in the Lord during times of discouragement.

First, spend more time reading God’s Word – especially the book of Psalms. David wrote many of the Psalms in the midst of overwhelming and discouraging circumstances. They serve to return our focus to God where His mercy and sovereignty are recurring themes throughout the Book.

During my first year as a pastor, a member of our congregation was terminally ill in hospital. On one particular occasion when I went to visit him, he was troubled and discouraged, and nothing the hospital staff would do could calm him down. Not knowing what else to do, I started reading to him from the Psalms and the result was astounding. Even the hospital staff were amazed at how the reading of God’s Word had such a powerful, calming effect upon this man’s spirit.

Second, meditate on God’s Truth each night as you go to sleep. It is often at night that we are faced with the most intense discouragement. David said, “…my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches” (Psalm 63:5-6).

Discouragement comes as a result of believing Satan’s lies. Focus instead upon the Truth of God’s Word. Dwell and meditate upon a specific verse or passage that counteracts the lie from the enemy.

Faithful reading and meditation upon God’s Word can bring peace and joy during our times of greatest discouragement.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt…have good success.”

The Bible is different from any other book. The writer of Hebrews describes it as being “…quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

There are no errors in Scripture – no contradictions. It is the inspired, inerrant Word of God. There is nothing written in it that should have been omitted, and nothing omitted that should have been written. It has stood the test of time, and it will stand for all eternity.

God’s will for each one of us following salvation is our sanctification. Paul says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Sanctification is the process by which we become less and less like ourselves and more and more like Jesus. The will of God is not primarily a matter of our location or vocation; it is rather a matter of the condition of our heart. It’s not where you are or what you’re doing that is of primary concern to God; but it’s what you are that really matters to Him.

Do you remember the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as He prays to His Father and says, “Sanctify them with Thy truth: Thy Word is truth” (John 17:17)? God’s will is that we be sanctified, and Jesus is telling us how that happens: by a constant exposure to the Word of God.

We can never be successful from God’s perspective apart from the Word of God. The more we internalize God’s Word, the more we will discover God’s plan and purpose for our lives.

“Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3).

The book of Galatians is a written defense of the Gospel of the grace of God. The Gospel had come under attack by a number of false teachers who had invaded the Galatian church. They emphasized the necessity of works for salvation and were trying to bring the Galatian believers back into the bondage of legalistic religion from which they had been freed by the Gospel.

The Galatians believers began their Christian walk by faith and in chapter three, Paul asks if they were so foolish as to think that they could go on to spiritual maturity in any other way?

The false teachers taught that it was only possible to attain spiritual maturity by means of the law. Paul implied that since they began the Christian life by faith they should continue toward maturity in the same way.

Whenever a child is born he has all that he needs for life; nothing needs to be added. All that is necessary for that child to grow to maturity is food, exercise, and cleansing.

Whenever a child of God is born into God’s family, he has all that he needs spiritually and there is nothing that needs to be added. All that is necessary for that child of God to grow to spiritual maturity is for spiritual food, exercise, and cleansing.

He is fed spiritually through reading, studying, memorizing and meditating upon the Word of God. 1 Peter 2:2 states: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” A lack of spiritual appetite for the Word may be an indication of spiritual sickness (unconfessed sin) or it may be because we have replaced the Word with the “junk food” of life which ruins our spiritual appetite.

He obtains his spiritual exercise by using his spiritual gifts, by sharing his faith, and by purposely developing the character of Christ.

He is cleansed spiritually by allowing the Word of God to expose sin in his life, by keeping short accounts with God, and by asking forgiveness of those that he has wronged and offended.

There is nothing that we need in addition to faith in Christ for salvation. We are saved by grace through faith. It is in exactly the same manner that we grow to spiritual maturity. Don’t be content with where you are in your walk with the Lord. Press on towards spiritual maturity.

“Looking unto Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2).

The writer of the book of Hebrews includes a little phrase in the twelfth chapter which expresses the entire secret of the Christian life. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking Unto Jesus…”

The word “looking” is a translation of an untranslatable Greek word. It means to fix our gaze upon Him, and to turn it away from everything else. We are to look unto Jesus and at nothing else – certainly not at our troubles or circumstances.

David’s circumstances were less than ideal. Just a few days before he was established as king, we are told that “David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him…but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God” (1 Samuel 30:6).

Satan often brings to us the greatest discouragements just before God is about to intervene and bring blessing. That’s why Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

There are at least two ways that we – like David – can encourage our hearts in the Lord when faced with troubles and discouragement.

First, spend more time reading God’s Word — especially the book of Psalms. Many of David’s Psalms especially are written from the perspective of overwhelming discouragement and help us to see God’s perspective on life.

Not knowing what else to do, I started reading to him from the Psalms. Even the hospital staff were amazed at how the reading of God’s Word had such a powerful calming affect upon this man’s spirit.

Secondly, meditate on God’s Word – especially at night when it seems that the enemy brings the most discouraging thoughts to our minds. David said in Psalm 63:5-6 “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.”

Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a Roman prison. Added to that was the uncertainty that at any moment a Roman soldier could take his life. From a human perspective, Paul had ample reason to be discouraged. But there is not a trace of discouragement in the whole epistle. Instead it’s filled with “peace” and “joy.” Paul writes: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

The last thing you think about at night is usually the first thing you think about the next morning – so fix your mind upon the life-giving truths of God’s Word rather than the destructive lies of the enemy.

“Looking unto Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2).

As we look in the Scriptures, we find that the teaching of Jesus is our instruction for living the Christian life. It’s not a matter of becoming a Christian and just doing our own thing. The Lord Jesus Christ has standards and instructions for every area of our lives.

Every decision we make needs to be based squarely upon the Word of God.

Life is held together by a very intricate series of cause-and-effect relationships. You can’t obey the teachings of Christ without being blessed. You cannot disobey them without there being consequences. And in every area of life where we disobey or ignore the teachings of Christ there will be resulting conflicts and problems.

I’ve come to the conclusion that very few people actually want Biblical counsel. It’s very easy to help people who are desperate and are longing for a closer walk with God. It’s impossible to help people that merely want a resolution of their conflicts.

Parents want help with troubled youth but not enough to change their own wrong attitudes. People want help with their marriage but not enough to take responsibility for their own sin and say, “I was wrong. Will you please forgive me?”
