“But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die…” (1 Kings 19:4).

Most of us have experienced the wide spectrum of emotions from the elation of meeting our spouse for the first time to the grieving over the loss of a loved one. Emotions are a wonderful and appropriate part of the way that God has designed each one of us. But there are also wrong and harmful emotions that, if unchecked, can bring all kinds of destruction to our lives and relationships. Emotions can be so extremely powerful that we have a tendency to follow them wherever they lead us.

Moses was angry and he struck the rock a second time in direct disobedience of God’s command. That anger barred Moses from entering the Promised Land (Numbers 20:7-12).

Samson was “in love.” He was so emotionally involved with this woman that he wasn’t even able to think rationally, even rejecting the pleadings and counsel of his parents and violating the clear teaching of Scripture (Judges 15:16).

Elijah had defeated the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:21-40); but overwhelmed by the emotion of fear he runs and hides from Jezebel. In the next chapter he continues to follow his emotions and prayed that God would end his life (1 Kings 19:3-4).

Emotions are a function of the soul – along with our mind and our will. There is a delicate balance which much be maintained. If we allow our emotions to be in charge, life will be like one long roller coaster ride. Our day-to-day decisions will be determined by how we feel at the moment. Some times we’ll feel like forgiving; other times we won’t. Some weeks we’ll feel like going to church; other weeks we’ll stay at home. Some days – because of how we feel – we are quick to praise and encourage; other days, we are negative and critical.

It also has the http://davidfraymusic.com/events/prinzregententheater-munich/ viagra online same function as that of well-known medicines. She was surprised to see him interested in davidfraymusic.com order cialis the sex. Emotions can hinder us from doing what’s right. This is what destroys many marriages. He doesn’t “feel” like he loves her any more. She doesn’t “feel” like she could ever forgive him; and so they get a divorce.

As Christians our lives need to be governed by Truth, not feelings. Emotions are a by-product of what we choose to believe. That’s why it is so critical that we fill our mind with the Word of God. The more we choose to believe the Truth the more our lives will align with God’s will. When it comes time for decision making, we need to base our decisions not upon how we are feeling at the moment, but upon the unchangeable Truth of God’s Word.

We may not always feel like doing what is right. That’s when we need to make a Truth adjustment and by faith choose to do what right regardless of how we feel. Perhaps you need to make that Truth adjustment today and realign your thoughts, words, actions and attitudes with the clearly revealed teaching of God’s Word.

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13).

How we respond when we have been hurt or wronged is an eloquent indication of our walk with God. As Christians we are called to a higher standard than the world. That standard highlights our inability to live the Christian life in our own strength. We can’t pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. We are totally inadequate for the task.

The following passages of Scripture reveal the standard to which we are held accountable as Christians:

  • Luke 6:27-29 – But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
  • Romans 12:21 – Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
  • 1 Peter 3:9 – Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

Two wrongs do not make a right. The writer of Proverbs says, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1). We do not need to treat others in the same way that we have been treated. It is clear from these passages of Scripture that we need to act – not react. Neither should we simply be passive; but God’s Word confirms the need to actively rise above the tit-for-tat behaviour that characterizes so many failing relationships.

This is what should set us apart as Christians; and why we need to daily draw on the power of the Risen Christ. The wrongs committed against us are opportunities for us to grow in our walk with God as we acknowledge the Truth of His Word and submit ourselves to be governed by its principles rather than our emotions.
