“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (2 Peter 1:10).

An essential part of understanding God’s will for our life is understanding the concept of a person’s “life calling.” When a person understands the calling for his life, he will have a greater sense of spiritual purpose and a greater motivation to make his life count for eternity.

Related to this are three terms that we need to understand: our life purpose, life goal, and life calling.

The life purpose of every Christian is to glorify God. This is the ultimate purpose for everything that God has created. Ephesians 1:12 says “that we should be to the praise of His glory…” The Bible shares the many ways that even our finite lives can bring Him glory.

We glorify God when we deal with unconfessed sin (Joshua 7:19).
We glorify God when we praise Him (Psalm 50:23).
We glorify God when we ask Him for help (Psalm 50:15).
We glorify God when we evidence spiritual “fruit” (John 15:8).
We glorify God when we suffer reproach for Christ’s sake (I Peter 4:14).
We glorify God by being united in mind and spirit (Romans 15:6).

As we follow through with these Biblical injunctions, we are able to glorify God through our lives. This is something we should seek to do every single day.

Our life goal is to win as many people to Christ as possible. This is the goal that Jesus had for coming into the world. He said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Jesus confirmed this goal to Peter when He said, “. . . Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

The goal of every Christian is to win as many people to Christ as possible because life is a race against time.

The Christian life is essentially a life of service; and our life calling is the particular group of people that God wants us to serve and pour our lives into. Peter was called to the Jewish nation. Paul was called to the Gentiles.

In more recent times, Hudson Taylor was called to minister to the Chinese people. John Wesley was called to the common people of England. George Muller was called to serve orphans. David Brainerd was called to reach the frontier Indians of America. D. L. Moody was called to reach the children of Chicago.

The ministry of Prison Fellowship began through a calling to minister to the needs of prisoners. Many a crisis-pregnancy center has been started out of a calling to minister to the needs of unwed mothers and unborn children. Thousands of servicemen centers and churches have begun because of a calling to minister to the military.

Your life calling is the particular group of people to whom God will send you to serve. God has a precise purpose for each person whom He brings into the world. That purpose begins by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, but that’s just the beginning. The next step is dedicating our life to the Lord Jesus Christ as a living sacrifice (See Romans 12:1-2). It’s at this point that the Lord will begin to make clear to us the particular group of people that He wants us to serve.

What is the group of people that God is calling you to serve? What is your life calling and what are you doing with your life that is making a difference in eternity?
