“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (2 Peter 1:10).

An essential part of understanding God’s will for our life is understanding the concept of a person’s “life calling.” When a person understands the calling for his life, he will have a greater sense of spiritual purpose and a greater motivation to make his life count for eternity.

Related to this are three terms that we need to understand: our life purpose, life goal, and life calling.

The life purpose of every Christian is to glorify God. This is the ultimate purpose for everything that God has created. Ephesians 1:12 says “that we should be to the praise of His glory…” The Bible shares the many ways that even our finite lives can bring Him glory.

We glorify God when we deal with unconfessed sin (Joshua 7:19).
We glorify God when we praise Him (Psalm 50:23).
We glorify God when we ask Him for help (Psalm 50:15).
We glorify God when we evidence spiritual “fruit” (John 15:8).
We glorify God when we suffer reproach for Christ’s sake (I Peter 4:14).
We glorify God by being united in mind and spirit (Romans 15:6).

As we follow through with these Biblical injunctions, we are able to glorify God through our lives. This is something we should seek to do every single day.

Our life goal is to win as many people to Christ as possible. This is the goal that Jesus had for coming into the world. He said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Jesus confirmed this goal to Peter when He said, “. . . Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

Throughout the world 150,000 people will die every single day. That’s over 6,000 every hour; over 100 every minute. The goal of every Christian is to win as many people to Christ as possible because life is a race against time.

The Christian life is essentially a life of service; and our life calling is the particular group of people that God wants us to serve and pour our lives into. Peter was called to the Jewish nation. Paul was called to the Gentiles.

In more recent times, Hudson Taylor was called to minister to the Chinese people. John Wesley was called to the common people of England. George Muller was called to serve orphans. David Brainerd was called to reach the frontier Indians of America. D. L. Moody was called to reach the children of Chicago.

The ministry of Prison Fellowship began through a calling to minister to the needs of prisoners. Many a crisis-pregnancy center has been started out of a calling to minister to the needs of unwed mothers and unborn children. Thousands of servicemen centers and churches have begun because of a calling to minister to the military.

Your life calling is the particular group of people to whom God will send you to serve. God has a precise purpose for each person whom He brings into the world. That purpose begins by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, but that’s just the beginning. The next step is dedicating our life to the Lord Jesus Christ as a living sacrifice (See Romans 12:1-2). It’s at this point that the Lord will begin to make clear to us the particular group of people that He wants us to serve.

What is the group of people that God is calling you to serve? What is your life calling and what are you doing with your life that is making a difference in eternity?

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

When our relationship with God is in first place and our ministry and responsibilities to our family are in proper order – we have the tremendous potential of making our lives count for eternity.

For many Christians, purpose in life involves finding a well-paying job and being successful at it. As a result, many children grow up in Christian homes believing that once they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior they have obtained God’s highest goal and that they can continue living their lives as they please.

God has brought us into the world at this precise time in history to fulfill His purpose. The words of Mordecai to Esther are just as appropriate for us today – “…and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).

What are you doing with your life that is going to make a difference in eternity? When you stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ, what will you be able to look back on and say, “This is what – by God’s grace – I have accomplished for the Kingdom of God”? Does your life have a spiritual purpose for living?

Some time ago I spoke to a young man who was on his way to the mission field, and I asked, “Why missions?” He replied that he had been involved in construction work and he realized that the buildings he was putting up might last 60, 80, or 100 years; but he was doing nothing with his life that would last for eternity. So he dedicated himself to the Lord and made himself available to go anywhere the Lord would want him to go and to do anything the Lord would want him to do, and the Lord then directed him to invest his life on the mission field.

As parents, we need to encourage our children to live with eternity in view. Challenge them – following salvation – to dedicate themselves fully to the Lord (Romans 12:1).

Dr. Alexander Duff said, “There was a time when I had no care or concern for the heathen. That was the time I had no care for my own soul. But by the grace of God when I began to care for my own soul, I began to care for the heathen too. And in my closet on my bended knees I said: ‘O Lord, Thou knowest; silver and gold have I none for this cause. What I have I give; I offer myself; wilt Thou accept the gift?'”

That’s what God wants – nothing more, nothing less than the total surrender of our lives to His will and to His great cause of world evangelization.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

What is it that you hunger and thirst after? – the good life, money, success? Be aware that your children will most likely pick up your value system. Your goals, desires, and aspirations will most likely become theirs.

The greatest influence for Jesus Christ upon my own life was my father. Everyday I was confronted with the reality of his commitment to Jesus Christ in our home. You see, the home is where you discover the reality of a person’s spirituality.

If you want to see what an animal is really like, you don’t go to the zoo or the circus. That’s where they’re on display. That’s where they perform. If you want to see what an animal is really like, you need to go to its natural habitat – its day-by-day environment.

If you want to find out what a Christian is really like, where do you go? You don’t go to the Church!! You go to his home. If you want to find out the sincerity of a person’s commitment to Jesus Christ and to following Biblical principles, you don’t ask his Pastor or Church leaders, you need to ask his wife and children.

I am becoming increasingly convinced that the reality of a person’s spirituality is not found in the church, but in the home. If our Christianity is going to be effective in reaching a lost world for Jesus Christ, then it must first prove itself in the Christian home.

As parents, we need to have a vital spiritual purpose for living and we need to be able to pass on that purpose to our children. Teach them convictions that are worth standing alone for. If our children do not have a purpose worth standing for, then they have absolutely nothing worth living for.

Give your children the desire to follow God’s ways by being a living demonstration of its truths and principles.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” (Matthew 6:19-20).

It is not enough for you or your children to have great aspirations for their lives. It is not a question of what you want them to do or what they want to do, but of what God wants them to accomplish for His glory.

Many children grow up in Christians homes believing that once they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior they have obtained God’s highest purpose, and that they can continue living their lives as they please. As parents, we need to challenge them to live their lives with an eternal perspective.

There is an old adage that describes a certain kind of Christian as being “so heavenly minded that he is of no earthly good.” Personally, I have never met a single Christian who suffers from that complaint; but I know from experience that we can be so earthly minded that we are of no heavenly good. Materialism is rampant in our society. If our value system is temporal, that will likely be passed on to our children; and although by God’s grace they may accept Christ as Savior, they will likely never accomplish anything great for the kingdom of God.

I once talked with a young Christian businessman, and in the course of conversation, I asked him if he had any goals for his company. He surprised me as he quickly responded by stating five goals that he had for his business. Goal number one was to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His second goal was to use the money which God entrusted to his business to assist Christian ministries and mission organisations. Goal number three was to lead his employees to personal faith in Jesus Christ and disciple them in the things of the Lord. His fourth goal was to provide the best possible jobs and salaries for his workers. And his fifth and final goal was to make a profit. Now that is a young man who has a definite spiritual purpose in life.
