“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24).

The Sermon on the Mount is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus is telling His disciples what discipleship is going to be like. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different” – and in Matthew 7:13-27, Jesus shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their response.

Because a response is awaiting you. Jesus is not making an invitation for salvation; but rather a challenge to live the life of a committed disciple. Salvation is a free gift (Romans 6:23), but to be a committed disciple of Jesus Christ will cost us everything we’ve got (Luke 14:33).

There are two ways you can choose: the broad way and the narrow way. Others choose the path of least resistance. They do what they want to do and when they want to do it. Their decisions are based upon what will make them the most self-fulfilled, the most comfortable, or the most money. But the disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different. He is to build his life around the eternal principles of God’s Word. He realizes his days are numbered and he lives to make every moment count for eternity.

On another occasion, Jesus had preached a similarly convicting sermon to His followers and we are told that “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him” (John 6:66). Many are simply not prepared to pay the price.

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matthew 7:3).

The Sermon on the Mount is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus is telling His disciples what discipleship is going to be like. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different” – and in Matthew 7:1-12, Jesus shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their relationships with others.

The person who is different in his attitude toward wealth (the previous section – Matthew 6:19-34) is certainly going to be different in his attitude toward other people. Others are constantly complaining, criticizing, and judging – both to make themselves feel good and look good in front of others. If we can take someone down a notch or two by our critical words, then we are effectively raising ourselves up a notch or two in our own estimation.

But the disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different. He must squelch the condemning judgment of a critical spirit which is the greatest destroyer of churches and families. This is the number one reason why Christian parents lose their children to the world – because of a harsh negative, critical, judgmental spirit. Jesus warns against it!

Judging one another is a result of diminishing the seriousness of our own sins and magnifying the seriousness of the sins of others. But the closer we get to God the less we see of others faults (especially those in our own family) and the more we see our own shortcomings and failings. When we’re really walking close with God, we see the reality of our own sinful hearts.

Before we try and remove the splinter out of the eye of our spouse, our children, other church members or leaders, let’s be sure to remove the 2×4 out of our own eye. Let’s take responsibility for our own wrong words, actions, and attitudes. Let’s live the life of a committed disciple of Jesus Christ. Let’s be different!

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:20).

The Sermon on the Mount is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus is telling His disciples what discipleship is going to be like. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different” – and in Matthew 6:19-34, Jesus shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their attitude toward wealth.

Others build their lives around the temporal, material things of this life. They are consumed with the here and now. They live only for the present. Their philosophy is “Go for the gusto, man, because you only come around this way once.”

But the disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different. He is not to set his heart and affection on the things of this world. He is different, because while everyone else is looking for things that never satisfy, he has his eyes sharply focused on eternity. The disciple of Jesus Christ lives with eternity constantly in view.

Compared with the eons of time, our life on earth is just a moment. Yet how we live our life will echo throughout eternity. We have this one brief moment in time – this one fleeting opportunity to make our lives count for Jesus Christ!

When you stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ, what are you going to be able to look back on and say, “This is what – by God’s grace – I’ve accomplished for the Kingdom of God”? What are you doing with your life that is going to make a difference in eternity?

“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 6:1).

The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to the disciples. The sermon is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different – Matthew 6:1-18 shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their worship

Others are proud of their religious achievements. They boast about how much they’ve done for God. But the disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different. He is to recognize that worship is primarily a condition of the heart. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

You don’t worship God primarily by singing hymns or choruses but by living a life of consecrated obedience. You don’t worship God primarily by giving to the church of your time and money but by obeying every single word of God. We can never truly worship God aside from obedience to His Word. All our sacrifices of time and money are meaningless unless they flow from a heart of consecrated obedience. The Pharisees gave the appearance of spirituality (Matthew 6:1-5) yet Jesus said that they worshiped God with their mouths but their hearts were far from Him (Matthew 15:8).

God delights for us to worship Him. But there is more to worship than simply attending a church service. Praying, fasting and giving are all necessary aspects of worship, but they must flow out of a heart that is in right relationship with God.

“Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19).

The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to the disciples. The sermon is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus has just called His twelve disciples and is telling them what discipleship is all about. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different – Matthew 5:17-48 shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their interpretation of Scripture.

The world is its own authority, but the disciple of Jesus Christ willingly puts himself under the ultimate authority of the Word of God.

A mam came to my father many years ago in Belfast, Northern Ireland and asked a question. He said, “Jack, doesn’t it say in the Bible, Eat, drink and be merry?“ My father replied, “Yes, it does say that, but…” He interrupted, “That’s alright. That’s all I want to know!”

Let’s face it, a person can twist Scripture to say whatever he wants it to say. He can force his own interpretation to justify almost any lifestyle. But the disciple of Jesus Christ must be different. Others might adjust Scripture to justify their behavior, but the disciple must allow Scripture to legislate his behavior.

So often we base our decisions and actions on feelings or preferences rather than on the rock solid teaching of God’s Word.

It doesn’t matter what you or I think, or even what our favorite author or radio preacher says – it matters what the Bible says. That’s all that matters.
The FDA also https://regencygrandenursing.com/about-us/regency-faq-s generic levitra has permitted to use Sildenafil citrate as it might result in various health impacts. Due to ridiculous expectations of male masculinity that buy viagra generic exists in most minds, the thought of losing sexual health even during the young age.
That means we need to be men and women of the Word and we need to live not according to opinions or preferences or feelings, but we need to live by Biblical standards. We need to forgive even when we don’t feel like it. We need to be honest when it would be easier to lie or cheat. We need to be committed to the marriage relationship regardless of how we have been hurt or wronged by our spouse.

The disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different.

Dedicate yourself afresh to the authority of God’s Word and submit yourself today to its teaching and principles. That’s what is going to make a difference – now and in eternity!

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to the disciples. The sermon is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Jesus has just called His twelve disciples and is telling them what discipleship is all about. The substance of His message is this, “If you are going to be my disciples, then you are going to have to be different – different from the Jews, different from the Gentiles, and different from the religious leaders” (Matthew 6:8).

Matthew 5:1-16 shows how the disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different in their character. Jesus lists eight qualities known as the Beatitudes that should set us apart and identify us as followers of Christ. They spell out for us how to live the life of a committed disciple.

Each beatitude is divided into three parts: the pronouncement, the description, and the reward.

THE PRONOUNCMENT
What does it mean to be blessed? Blessedness is not an emotional feeling it’s a matter of fact. It’s not what we feel, but it’s what God thinks of us. And the person who meets the conditions of the beatitudes in God’s eyes is blessed, although he may not necessarily feel blessed at the time.

THE DESCRIPTION
Jesus describes eight timeless, non-optional qualities He is seeking to develop in each of our lives. As we respond to the work of God in our lives, this is what sets us apart.

  • Poor in spirit – humility, a servant’s heart
  • Mourn – grieving over sin, genuine repentance
  • Meek – yielding of personal rights and expectations to the Lord
  • Hunger and thirst after righteousness – spiritual purpose, Christlikeness
  • Merciful – willingness to forgive our offenders
  • Pure in heart – an undivided heart, pure motives
  • Peacemaker – seeking to bring peace between men and God, between man and man, and between self and others
  • Persecuted for righteousness – suffering specific loss because of association with and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. Note: the text does not say “being persecuted” but “having been persecuted.” Blessed are those who have come through persecution and have endured. There is no reward for giving up in the middle.

This gives rise to complications for the blood to be pumped out of the heart, channeled throughout the cheap cialis body, and brought back. This balance is disturbed when http://respitecaresa.org/event/valentines-parents-night-out/valentines-pno-2019/ order generic cialis we feed ourselves more than we need or when we abuse specific substances. Men that are found with mild or moderate impotence condition responds well to tadalafil 5mg india PDE-5 inhibitors and this might allow regaining their natural erections and no longer need for lowering their dependence on medication. Dutiful – being cordial, agreeable, and keen to viagra generic wholesale please, unwilling to take autonomous action, and fitting in when under pressure.
THE REWARD
The kingdom of heaven is different from eternal life. Eternal life is a free gift (Romans 6:23); but our position in the kingdom of heaven is a reward for those Christians who have been faithful and have given their all for Christ. There are those who will be “great in the Kingdom of Heaven” and those who will be “the least” (Matthew 5:19).

How different are you from the world and even from the religious people of our day? No one will see a difference until we start applying the Truth of God’s Word to our lives and start living the life of a committed disciple of Jesus Christ.

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Matthew 7:28-29).

The Jewish scribes had accumulated the sayings of other rabbis and when they taught they would footnote everything they said. But Jesus said, “Verily I say unto you…” There is no record of any Jewish rabbi ever saying those words. On occasions Jesus made it doubly strong by saying, “Verily, verily…” What He was in fact saying was, “I Personally by My Own authority, tell you…” And to people in New Testament times this was astounding!

Jesus told His disciples what discipleship was going to be like. The sermon can be divided into six clear sections each detailing an area where the disciple of Jesus Christ was to be different. His disciples were to be…

• Different in their character (5:1-16)
• Different in their interpretation of Scripture (5:17-48)
• Different in their worship (6:1-18)
• Different in their attitude toward wealth (6:19-34)
• Different in their relationships with others (7:1-12)
• Different in their response (7:13-27)

The key verse is Matthew 6:8 – “Therefore do not be like them…” The disciples of Jesus Christ are to be different – different in the nature of their righteousness, different from the Jews, different from the Gentiles, different from the religious leaders.

This is where most of our church outreach and even our parenting has fallen short. We have made converts but not disciples. We have led others to faith in Christ but we have failed to disciple them in the teachings of Jesus.

At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you…” (Matthew 28:19-20).

“And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying…” (Matthew 5:1-2).

The calling of Jesus’ disciples followed a series of controversies that Jesus had with the religious leaders and it immediately preceded the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

The controversies highlighted the fact that Jesus’ righteousness was different from the righteousness of the Pharisees and religious leaders. Theirs was merely an outward form of righteousness but Jesus was more concerned about the condition of the heart.

So after He had called His disciples, He sat down – now that’s significant. Whenever someone in our western culture has something important to say he stands up; but in New Testament times, if a Jewish Rabbi had something important to say, he would sit down. So Jesus sat down and preached the Sermon on the Mount.

Notice to whom the Sermon was addressed (Matthew 5:1-2). It was addressed to His disciples – not the religious leaders or the multitudes that followed Him. The Sermon on the Mount is not addressed to unbelievers. It’s not showing us the way to be saved. It is telling us how to live once we have been saved. This is what discipleship is all about

To become a Christian costs us nothing. It implies an acknowledgement that we are sinners and a total trust in Jesus alone as the only One who can save us from the consequences of our sin which is death. A terrible price had to be paid – it cost the life of God’s own dear Son. But it costs us nothing to become a Christian because there is nothing we could ever do to deserve salvation. The Bible refers to salvation as a gift – a free gift (Romans 6:23).

There was no other good enough,

But discipleship is something different. Jesus said, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). To receive the free gift of salvation costs us nothing, but to be a committed disciple of Jesus Christ will cost us everything we’ve got!

It is the life of a committed disciple of Jesus Christ that makes a difference now and in eternity!

Over the next few days, I want to look at the various sections of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus describes in detail the requirements for discipleship.
