“If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye…on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified” (I Peter 4:14).

God has a very specific plan for each one of our lives but we share the same life purpose – to glorify God. This is the ultimate purpose for everything that God has created. Paul says “that we should be to the praise of His glory…” (Ephesians 1:12).

The Bible then gives us very precise ways in which we can glorify God and fulfill the purpose for which we are created.

We glorify God when we Suffer Reproach for Christ’s Sake.

Suffering is an occupational hazard for the Christian. It’s to be expected.

The early church welcomed and even embraced it because they knew that suffering for Christ’s sake brought its own reward and could accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God.

Suffering for doing what is right is an expected part of a believer’s life. You may lose your job or be overlooked for promotion because you refuse to lie for the company. You may be mocked because of your witness for Christ. Many around the world are in prison and even face the sentence of death because of their loyalty to Jesus.

It is important to distinguish between suffering for Christ’s sake and suffering for our sake. There are certainly times that the world reacts to the message; but more often than not, they react to the messenger. That’s why Paul admonishes us to speak the “truth in love…” (Ephesians 4:15). Suffering because of our own wrong attitudes or lack of compassion will certainly not bring God any glory and will certainly not bring us any eternal rewards.

We are to contend for the faith but we are not be contentious.

Let’s make sure that if we suffer, we do so for the right reason and bring glory to God.

“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace…But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up” (Daniel 3:17-18).

There would certainly be strong objections if our government rounded up our young people and sent them off to war without providing any kind of training. Yet many Christian young people are sent to schools and institutions where they are indoctrinated with humanistic philosophy and are exposed to all kinds of pressures from their peers without receiving any preparation or training at home.

Home is the boot camp of the Christian life. It’s where we are supposed to teach and train our children and prepare them for the battlefield of life. Certainly if you homeschool your children, you are provided with a tremendous opportunity to invest in their young lives. But even if you don’t homeschool, you have an even greater need and responsibility to train and prepare your children for the pressures they will encounter on a daily basis.

Life is meaningless apart from Jesus Christ, and it is the responsibility of every Christian parent to communicate this to their children. The most effective way to communicate this truth to your children is not only to teach it but to practice it. Show them that Jesus Christ is really important to you by spending time with them daily in God’s Word. If they ask you a question, don’t just tell them what you think; ask them what God thinks and take them to the Word of God for their answers. Don’t just tell them that they can’t do a certain thing; explain the Biblical principle behind the restriction. The reason why Scripture time and time again says, “Teach these things to your children…” is so that your children will have a vital spiritual purpose for living.

Are you preparing them for the spiritual battles that lie ahead? Your children will one day face a harsh, brutal world; make sure that when they face it that they are prepared for it. Give your children the desire to follow God’s ways by demonstrating to them that following Scriptural principles represents a far superior way of life than anything else that the world has to offer.
