“And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying…” (Matthew 5:1-2).

The calling of Jesus’ disciples followed a series of controversies that Jesus had with the religious leaders and it immediately preceded the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

The controversies highlighted the fact that Jesus’ righteousness was different from the righteousness of the Pharisees and religious leaders. Theirs was merely an outward form of righteousness but Jesus was more concerned about the condition of the heart.

So after He had called His disciples, He sat down – now that’s significant. Whenever someone in our western culture has something important to say he stands up; but in New Testament times, if a Jewish Rabbi had something important to say, he would sit down. So Jesus sat down and preached the Sermon on the Mount.

Notice to whom the Sermon was addressed (Matthew 5:1-2). It was addressed to His disciples – not the religious leaders or the multitudes that followed Him. The Sermon on the Mount is not addressed to unbelievers. It’s not showing us the way to be saved. It is telling us how to live once we have been saved. This is what discipleship is all about

To become a Christian costs us nothing. It implies an acknowledgement that we are sinners and a total trust in Jesus alone as the only One who can save us from the consequences of our sin which is death. A terrible price had to be paid – it cost the life of God’s own dear Son. But it costs us nothing to become a Christian because there is nothing we could ever do to deserve salvation. The Bible refers to salvation as a gift – a free gift (Romans 6:23).

There was no other good enough,
To pay the price of sin;
He only could unlock the gate

Of Heav’n and let us in.

But discipleship is something different. Jesus said, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). To receive the free gift of salvation costs us nothing, but to be a committed disciple of Jesus Christ will cost us everything we’ve got!

It is the life of a committed disciple of Jesus Christ that makes a difference now and in eternity!

Over the next few days, I want to look at the various sections of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus describes in detail the requirements for discipleship.

“Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15).

There are many reasons why Christians should be thankful; but sometimes we can be so caught up in our material blessings that we miss what should be the most significant object of our gratitude.

Paul had his priorities right when he said, “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15). Paul was so overcome with gratefulness that he couldn’t even put his thoughts into words.

Of all the gifts that God has given us, of all the blessings He has showered upon us, there is none greater and there is none more deserving of our gratitude than the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else pales into insignificance when compared with the holy, sinless Son of God.

There’s good reason for us to be thankful for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Without Christ we have a sentence of death hanging over all our heads for “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Without Christ there is no salvation “…for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Without Christ there is no other way to the Father because Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).

Without Christ we are “…aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). That is the awful condition of the man or woman without Christ today.

Yes, it’s right and proper to be thankful for the material blessings we enjoy; but let’s put them in proper perspective. The hymn writer reminds us:

“There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin;
He only could unlock the gate of heaven and let us in.”

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief” (1 Timothy 1:15).

John Newton wrote, “When I get to heaven, I shall see three wonders there. The first wonder will be to see many there whom I did not expect to see; the second wonder will be to miss many people who I did expect to see; and the third and greatest wonder of all will be to find myself there.”

John Newton – who wrote one of the church’s most beloved hymns, Amazing Grace – knew what he was talking about.

There are many who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior but who have never progressed further in their walk with God. Although saved by grace through faith, their lives give little or no indication that they are on their way to heaven. Call them backsliders or carnal Christians or whatever, it is these that 1 John 2:28 says will be ashamed at the return of Christ. No “Well done good and faithful servant” for these – only shame and regret for a life wasted and opportunities lost.

Others who give the appearance that they are on their way to heaven will likely be shocked when they enter eternity and realize that the very things that they trusted in for salvation were unable to save their souls. Religion, church attendance, baptism, good works can never merit us a place in heaven. The Bible says that all of our “righteousnesses” – good works – in God’s sight are as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). The Bible says, “…there is none that doeth good, no not one” (Romans 3:12).

But there will be many like John Newton who will realize with wonder and awe that they are undeserving of heaven and whose only boast will be, “I am here today because Jesus Christ died for me.” Are you among that number? What are you trusting in to get you to heaven?

“Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3).

The book of Galatians is a written defense of the Gospel of the grace of God. The Gospel had come under attack by a number of false teachers who had invaded the Galatian church. They emphasized the necessity of works for salvation and were trying to bring the Galatian believers back into the bondage of legalistic religion from which they had been freed by the Gospel.

The Galatians believers began their Christian walk by faith and in chapter three, Paul asks if they were so foolish as to think that they could go on to spiritual maturity in any other way?

The false teachers taught that it was only possible to attain spiritual maturity by means of the law. Paul implied that since they began the Christian life by faith they should continue toward maturity in the same way.

Whenever a child is born he has all that he needs for life; nothing needs to be added. All that is necessary for that child to grow to maturity is food, exercise, and cleansing.

Whenever a child of God is born into God’s family, he has all that he needs spiritually and there is nothing that needs to be added. All that is necessary for that child of God to grow to spiritual maturity is for spiritual food, exercise, and cleansing.

He is fed spiritually through reading, studying, memorizing and meditating upon the Word of God. 1 Peter 2:2 states: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” A lack of spiritual appetite for the Word may be an indication of spiritual sickness (unconfessed sin) or it may be because we have replaced the Word with the “junk food” of life which ruins our spiritual appetite.

He obtains his spiritual exercise by using his spiritual gifts, by sharing his faith, and by purposely developing the character of Christ.

He is cleansed spiritually by allowing the Word of God to expose sin in his life, by keeping short accounts with God, and by asking forgiveness of those that he has wronged and offended.

There is nothing that we need in addition to faith in Christ for salvation. We are saved by grace through faith. It is in exactly the same manner that we grow to spiritual maturity. Don’t be content with where you are in your walk with the Lord. Press on towards spiritual maturity.

“Looking unto Jesus…” (Hebrews 12:2).

The writer of the book of Hebrews includes a little phrase in the twelfth chapter which expresses the entire secret of the Christian life. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking Unto Jesus…”

The word “looking” is a translation of an untranslatable Greek word. It means to fix our gaze upon Him, and to turn it away from everything else. We are to look unto Jesus and at nothing else – certainly not at ourselves.

There is nothing in ourselves that even merits God’s love and yet He loves us. We have sinned and rebelled against God and yet the Bible says that, “…God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Jesus died in our place. He took the punishment we deserve. That’s the message of the Gospel. We owed a debt we couldn’t pay. He paid a debt He didn’t owe.

When we get to heaven, there is nothing that we will be able to boast about in ourselves. We won’t be able to say, I’m here today because of what a good person I was, or because I attended a certain church, or because I was baptized. Our only boast in heaven will be, I am here today because God loved me and He sent His Son to die for me.

That’s what salvation is all about – trusting in Jesus Christ and Him alone for salvation. Is that what you are trusting in? Has there ever been a time in your life when you have recognized that you are a sinner – unworthy of God’s love and unworthy of heaven? – and yet by faith you can today accept the free gift of salvation offered to you because of what Jesus Christ has done.

“Looking unto Jesus…” and not at ourselves.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24).

If someone were to ask you the question, “Do you have eternal life?” — how would you respond? Some people would say, “I don’t know” — by that they mean that they have never really given too much thought to eternal things. The Bible warns such a person in 2 Corinthians 6:2 by saying “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Others might respond to the question, “Do you have eternal life?” by saying, “I think so” — they are trusting in things like baptism or membership in a church; but there is a nagging doubt in the back of their mind that questions the validity of the very things which they are trusting in to get them to heaven. After all, if baptism or church membership could get someone to heaven, then why did Jesus Christ have to suffer and die on a Roman cross?

Still others would respond by saying, “I hope so” — they are hoping that as they stand before God, their good deeds might out-weigh their bad deeds; and on the basis of that, God will usher them into heaven. The basic problem with this argument is that it ignores the total depravity of man – we are all sinners (Romans 3:23). No one can keep the Ten Commandments. James 2:10 says, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”

But there are many people who can respond to the question, “Do you have eternal life?” by saying with absolute conviction, “I know so.” This is not a prideful boast of their own self achievement; rather, it is a trust which is based upon the achievement of another — the Lord Jesus Christ.

During the American Civil War, an informer in a small town disappeared and the commander in charge ordered ten men to be shot in reprisal. Several men were being detained in the local jail as prisoners of war, and ten men were selected from among them. One was a man by the name of William Humphrey — the father of several small children. Another young man in the prison cell by the name of Hiram Smith volunteered to go in the place of Humphrey since he thought it was better for a single man to die rather than a man with a young family. Hiram Smith was subsequently taken and shot in the place of William Humphrey. As the years passed, Humphrey could have reflected on those events and stated, “I’m here today because he died in my place!”

That will be our only boast in heaven — not, “I am here today because of what I have done” but “I am here today because Christ died for me, because He took my place and bore the condemnation of my sins on the cross at Calvary.”

Do you have the assurance of sins forgiven and a home in Heaven? The Bible tells us how you too can have that certainty. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

The moment a child is conceived something amazing happens – an eternal soul is created. That soul will never cease to exist. It will spend eternity in either heaven or hell. That’s why it is so important to remember that as parents we must give an account to God as to how we reared our children. We can’t afford to be passive – there is too much at stake!

As parents, we are primarily responsible for helping our children find peace with God. Paul exhorts us to “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). We are to fulfill the role of peacemaker in the home.

Several years ago, I asked a mother if her children had accepted Christ as their Savior. “That’s private,” she said, “I don’t know.” You need to know! There is no decision in life that is as critical or important. Be involved in the life of each child. Know where each one is at spiritually.

Leading your children to faith in Christ is not the responsibility of the church, the Sunday school or the youth group. It’s the primary responsibility of the Christian home.
