The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to the disciples. The sermon is not telling us how to be saved, but how to live after we have been saved. Others are proud of their religious achievements. They boast about how much they’ve done for God. But the disciple of Jesus Christ is to be different. He is to recognize that worship is primarily a condition of the heart. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).
You don’t worship God primarily by singing hymns or choruses but by living a life of consecrated obedience. You don’t worship God primarily by giving to the church of your time and money but by obeying every single word of God. We can never truly worship God aside from obedience to His Word. All our sacrifices of time and money are meaningless unless they flow from a heart of consecrated obedience. The Pharisees gave the appearance of spirituality (Matthew 6:1-5) yet Jesus said that they worshiped God with their mouths but their hearts were far from Him (Matthew 15:8).
God delights for us to worship Him. But there is more to worship than simply attending a church service. Praying, fasting and giving are all necessary aspects of worship, but they must flow out of a heart that is in right relationship with God.
