“And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison” (Genesis 39:20).

CorrieTenBoomJoseph was hated and abused by his brothers. He was sold by them as a slave and taken to Egypt. He was then accused of a crime he didn’t commit and was thrown into prison. We could separate each of these incidents in Joseph’s life and surmise that doing right doesn’t pay – after all, look at what happened to Joseph!

But God wants us by faith to see the bigger picture. God was at work through these circumstances in Joseph’s life. If Joseph had just focused on these events as isolated incidents – with no connection and no real purpose – it would have been very easy for him to become bitter. But Joseph saw God’s sovereign hand at work; and he was able to say to his brothers many years later, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive” (Genesis 50:20).

We could look at the seemingly isolated incidents in our own lives and have a totally wrong response. We could become angry and bitter if someone offends or wrongs us. We could become anxious or depressed as a result of some bad news or changing circumstances.

But God wants us by faith to see the bigger picture – to understand that He is in total control and that ultimately God writes the last chapter.

Corrie Ten Boom would often show a piece of her embroidery work to illustrate God’s sovereign plan. From the underside the pattern was unrecognizable – a collection of tangled threads and indiscriminate colors. But when viewed from above, the pattern was clear and defined. A few years ago, we visited Corrie’s family home in the Netherlands. A piece of her embroidery was on display and attached were the following words:

My life is but a weaving between my God and me,
I do not choose the colours, He works so steadily.

Not till the loom is silent, and the shuttle cease to fly,

The dark threads are as needful in the Weavers skilful hand,
as the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He has planned.

“The integrity of the upright shall guide them…” (Proverbs 11:3).

Usually when we are asking questions about God’s will there are two primary concerns. We want to know what we should do and where we should go. We are chiefly concerned about our vocation and our location.

But when we ask these questions first, we miss the most important aspect of the will of God. Paul says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). That’s not something we have to pray about! We are told exactly what God’s will is and it is the same for every Christian. God’s will is our sanctification.

Sanctification is the process by which we become less and less like ourselves and more and more like Jesus.

God’s will is not primarily a matter of our location or vocation – it’s a matter of the condition of our hearts. It’s not where we are or what we’re doing that is of primary concern to God; but it’s what we are that matters most to Him.

When we make Christ-likeness our chief concern, the other questions will find their answers by default. God will open up doors of opportunity and service. As long as we continue to develop the character of Jesus Christ we will continually have the guidance to stay on the right path and keep in the will of God.

The writer of Proverbs says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). The word “acknowledge” means “to know” Him. In every situation know and understand how Jesus would respond.

Ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” How would Jesus respond to this person who just wronged and hurt you?

If you get angry and bitter toward someone rather than showing forgiveness, that’s when you miss God’s will. It’s when you rebel rather than being obedient that you miss God’s direction. It’s when you lie rather than being honest that you get off the right path.

Make the quest for character and Christ-likeness your chief concern. If you are continually developing and demonstrating the character of Jesus Christ, it will be impossible for you to miss the will of God for your life in these other areas.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt…have good success.”

The Bible is different from any other book. The writer of Hebrews describes it as being “…quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

There are no errors in Scripture – no contradictions. It is the inspired, inerrant Word of God. There is nothing written in it that should have been omitted, and nothing omitted that should have been written. It has stood the test of time, and it will stand for all eternity.

God’s will for each one of us following salvation is our sanctification. Paul says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Sanctification is the process by which we become less and less like ourselves and more and more like Jesus. The will of God is not primarily a matter of our location or vocation; it is rather a matter of the condition of our heart. It’s not where you are or what you’re doing that is of primary concern to God; but it’s what you are that really matters to Him.

Do you remember the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as He prays to His Father and says, “Sanctify them with Thy truth: Thy Word is truth” (John 17:17)? God’s will is that we be sanctified, and Jesus is telling us how that happens: by a constant exposure to the Word of God.

A Christian that is in the will of God is a Christian that is in the Word of God. God has given us His Word as the means of making us more like His Son.

We can never be successful from God’s perspective apart from the Word of God. The more we internalize God’s Word, the more we will discover God’s plan and purpose for our lives.

“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (2 Peter 1:10).

An essential part of understanding God’s will for our life is understanding the concept of a person’s “life calling.” When a person understands the calling for his life, he will have a greater sense of spiritual purpose and a greater motivation to make his life count for eternity.

Related to this are three terms that we need to understand: our life purpose, life goal, and life calling.

The life purpose of every Christian is to glorify God. This is the ultimate purpose for everything that God has created. Ephesians 1:12 says “that we should be to the praise of His glory…” The Bible shares the many ways that even our finite lives can bring Him glory.

We glorify God when we deal with unconfessed sin (Joshua 7:19).
We glorify God when we praise Him (Psalm 50:23).
We glorify God when we ask Him for help (Psalm 50:15).
We glorify God when we evidence spiritual “fruit” (John 15:8).
We glorify God when we suffer reproach for Christ’s sake (I Peter 4:14).
We glorify God by being united in mind and spirit (Romans 15:6).

As we follow through with these Biblical injunctions, we are able to glorify God through our lives. This is something we should seek to do every single day.

Our life goal is to win as many people to Christ as possible. This is the goal that Jesus had for coming into the world. He said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Jesus confirmed this goal to Peter when He said, “. . . Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

Throughout the world 150,000 people will die every single day. That’s over 6,000 every hour; over 100 every minute. The goal of every Christian is to win as many people to Christ as possible because life is a race against time.

The Christian life is essentially a life of service; and our life calling is the particular group of people that God wants us to serve and pour our lives into. Peter was called to the Jewish nation. Paul was called to the Gentiles.

In more recent times, Hudson Taylor was called to minister to the Chinese people. John Wesley was called to the common people of England. George Muller was called to serve orphans. David Brainerd was called to reach the frontier Indians of America. D. L. Moody was called to reach the children of Chicago.

The ministry of Prison Fellowship began through a calling to minister to the needs of prisoners. Many a crisis-pregnancy center has been started out of a calling to minister to the needs of unwed mothers and unborn children. Thousands of servicemen centers and churches have begun because of a calling to minister to the military.

Your life calling is the particular group of people to whom God will send you to serve. God has a precise purpose for each person whom He brings into the world. That purpose begins by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, but that’s just the beginning. The next step is dedicating our life to the Lord Jesus Christ as a living sacrifice (See Romans 12:1-2). It’s at this point that the Lord will begin to make clear to us the particular group of people that He wants us to serve.

What is the group of people that God is calling you to serve? What is your life calling and what are you doing with your life that is making a difference in eternity?
